Guess I should write about B.A.L.L.S. [Day 12 - 30 Days to Changing Your Game]

Today is Day 12 of 30 Days to Changing Your Game. Such great stuff is happening – I am really proud of all of you! Yesterday, Dr. Mollie Marti showed us the light on Non-Guilty Pleasures and today my kicky friend Sandy Grason is going to share her hilarious and killer change changing concept B.A.L.L.S. You’ll love it!

Guess I Should Write about B.A.L.L.S

by Sandy Grason (@SandyGrason)

When Sarah asked me to write something for her 30 Days to Change Your Game series, I had a ton of ideas that I wanted to share with you.

However, as I sit down to write this, I keep hearing these words in my head “what is the ONE thing that you really, really need to say?”

And that ONE thing has to be B.A.L.L.S.

Not just because that word makes me laugh (a key ingredient in changing any game is the FUN-factor), but because I truly believe that having B.A.L.L.S. is the missing piece for so many high achieving, faaabulous, focused individuals out there.

We can manage to acccomplish great things, accumulate all kinds of awards, status symbols, etc. yet we continue to hang onto limiting beliefs about ourselves and focus too much on what others think.

Until you’ve developed B.A.L.L.S. you will continually hold yourself back from living your greatest life.  Let me share some things about B.A.L.L.S. with you. :-)

B.A.L.L.S. stands for:

Belief- in who you are and what you are doing.  The self-doubt that creeps in is just part of being human, but how you lightbulbgirl2 Guess I should write about B.A.L.L.S. [Day 12 30 Days to Changing Your Game]deal with that Inner Critic is what really matters.

Authenticity- You can’t have BALLS by imitating someone else.  You’ve got to find your own “IT” factor.  You’ve got it, I promise! And it’s not hiding inside a book or a seminar or a guru, it’s inside of you. Get quiet and reconnect to your greatest vision and then take inspired action.

Live Out Loud- Inspiration from the faaabulous J. Lo’s song Let’s Get Loud. “If you want to live your life, you gotta live it all the way, and don’t you waste it.” Are you willing to throw your hands up in the air and shout “Here I am, World!” ?

Liscious-ness – This is that certain sumpin’-sumpin’ that defines YOU when you are operating at your greatest.  Say your name and then add “ness” or “lisciousness” to the end of your name.  Do you know what that is?  I couldn’t always tell you what Sandy-ness is… so I defined it.  And then when I turned 40, Sandyness became Sandylisciousness-I don’t know what happened, but it’s been fun & exciting & and I highly recommend it!

SuperHero – If your life is a movie and you are the main character, why not be the superhero?  What would the superhero do right now?  You know that moment in the theater when the plot twists and the hero is challenged and you are yelling at the screen because you know exactly what the hero should do?  Well, view your life as if it was a movie and go do it! Go be the SuperHero of your life.

B.A.L.L.S. has helped me through countless uncomfortable situations and allowed me to grow in ways that I could have never imagined.  Having B.A.L.L.S. is an ongoing process, it never ends, and that’s a good thing!

So, if I were going to give you one tip that would really support you in changing your game, it’s gotta be the B.A.L.L.S.

How do you get B.A.L.L.S.?  Here’s my first assignment for you:

Take a deep breath, call all of your energy back into your body and ask yourself, “What am I most afraid of doing right now?”

Listen to the whisper, the one that gives your butterflies in your belly…. and go do one thing that scares you just a little- this inspired action (even in the face of fear) has the power to transform your life.

=:-)

  • Kevinness works...or even Kevin-licious, although I enjoy defining my Kevinness much better so maybe I'll go with that. Some call me Kevbo and that makes me feel a little Superhero-like. Kevbo it is! Or how about The Kevinator?

I love the challenge to ask myself what I am most afraid to do right now. I have that answer and now must do that thing, but thinking about it makes me feel like Superman lying in a bed of Kryptonite. I need to make a move, but am feeling a little powerless. However, I will say that this and the prior 11 blog entries have helped me tremendously, to the point where I can face some not-so fun things in my life and even look past them and towards escaping mediocrity.

Thank you, Sandy, for the great post and thanks Sarah for making this all possible.

    Kevin.
  • Kevbo! The Kevinator!
    Thanks mon.

Thank you, Sandy, for your fun and fantastic BALLS post! I love it and am going to work very hard to apply it to my life.
  • michaelleiter
    Sandy
    That post was just delicious.
Such a punchy writing style; it goes so well with your message.
My audacious thing for now has been to reach out to people I didn't know at all to build a working partnership. How to expand my agenda while furthering the agenda of the other person. That's hard enough to do with people you know well, but quite the leap when your only connection is a tenuous few conversations in the social media domain. <cr>

And so far, it's working beautifully. the final proof is in landing the real contracts, but the strong hints are clearly marked along the way. <cr>
Thanks for the putting it all in perspective.<cr>
    All the best,<cr>
    Michael
  • Thanks MIchael,
so great to hear what you're up to.
    you rock.
    xoxoxo
  • I've been doing everything but the Lisciousness part. GOTTA add that! But Sunshine is already a mouthful! lol

You know people always ask me about how I eat or my son having autism & being different. My response is "Well, my name is Sunshine, I was a Jersey girl who joined the ARMY, got married young, had 3 kids back-to-back, have a child w/autism, homeschool, & JUST now I'm different because I went raw? I've been so far outside of the box for all my life. Normal is relative, it's what you make it, it's YOUR normal! And my normal rocks my socks & most other people's off!" ;) lol

The funny thing is, most people who see my life from the outside think it's so hard. And while no, it's not always what anyone would ever call "easy", it's pretty freakin' rockin! :)

Thanks for inspiring more of us to have B.A.L.L.S Sandy. It's most definitely what we need more of in this world. :)

(p.s. I'd sign in via Twitter, but then I can never seem to see my response after I've posted it.)
  • hello Sunshine-liciousness :-)
    you're life sounds pretty rockin'!
    So nice to meet you!
    Thanks for commenting.
    xoxoxo
  • Thats just awesome, Sunshine-yness! I love how you rock at breaking down your choices, no apologies and no-holds-barred. You're right about the 'normal' thing...though, actually, I always thought normal was kinda 'weird'. We each have our own path to walk - it feels best when we can walk it with confidence and B.A.L.L.S!!
  • Ava Diamond (@feistywoman)
Thank you, Sandy for an awesome post! Love, love, love your B.A.L.L.S. analogy, and the brilliance of each concept.

I just went over to your site, and have to say, the Ordinary Life video that you made for your husband is one of the most beautiful things I've seen.
  • Thank you Ava-licious :-)
I love that video too. I cry every time I watch it. He is a total rock star.
    I feel very blessed.

so glad you liked the post!
    Keep in touch!
    xoxoxxo
  • WOW! I am excited about adding some B.A.L.L.S to my passion! Thank you Sandy.
  • My pleasure!
Glad to be of service in the B.A.L.L.S department ;-)
  • Thank you Sandy- You have inspired me to let go and soar. I am looking forward to being Richilicious! ( mmm sounds chocolatey lol)
  • Oh I had too much fun with this today ... evidence is on Twitter. Thank you Sandy for such a refreshing, fun and sassy approach to finding our greatness. I don't post my photo on Twitter for just anyone. In less than 12 hours I went from b.a.l.l.s. to B.A.L.L.S. Thanks a bunch! xoxo

Sarah, my hats off to you for inspiring and leading us, for bringing together such a talented, spirited, giving group of guest bloggers, and for sharing so much with us. I'm personally feeling a shift. It's amazing. Now to finish up that logo...
  • So glad to hear it Lori-licious! B.A.L.L.S. w/ a capital BALLS!
go do that voodoo that only YOU can do!
    xoxoxo
  • Mike Korner
Nice B.A.L.L.S Sandy! :) While all the topics you noted are important, the one I like the best is Superhero. "If your life is a movie and you are the main character, why not be the superhero?" is an awesome way to look at life and is very thought provoking. I added it to my quote collection. It kind of reminds me of a quote by General George S. Patton -- speaking of a guy with BALLS :) -- "I don't fear failure. I only fear the slowing up of the engine inside of me which is pounding, saying, 'Keep going, someone must be on top, why not you?'" Thanks for compelling me to think today Sandy, and for the cool quote :) Have a great one!
  • Thank Mike! That's a pretty great quote, yourself. Love it!

So what do you think about the male-ness of Mike-licious?
we were having a discussion w/ the men earlier.... what's the masculine version of liciousness?
  • Mike Korner
What is the masculine version of liciousness?

    Short answer: Lives-Without-Fear :)

Long answer: I'm not sure we need a masculine version of a made up word, but perhaps we do. One issue I see with some of the awesomely-creative alternatives suggested earlier (example: Mark-ules) is that we really need an "L" word don't we? Assuming yes, I'm not sure how "ness" snuck through but your Sandyness made the rules so no problem here :) Perhaps we should go with how the Indians named people ... What do you think about "Lives Without Fear"? Example: Mike Lives-Without-Fear, Sandy Lives-Without-Fear, Sarah Lives-Without-Fear, etc.

    p.s. You asked :)
  • Oh wowee, this one really blew me away today - I think it was the element of FUN that just struck me. I don't take time to have enough fun, I get too serious about business and life. It's time to truly be Jesslicious and have fun being me! :) I thoroughly enjoyed reading through all of the comments, as well as the main post - great job, everyone!!!! :)
  • I think FUN is the secret to life. If we can find a way to make the stuff we have to do - fun, then we can do anything!
and if we can't make it fun while we are doing it, we can at least give ourselves a big celebration after we've done it! right?
    :-D
  • I know just what you mean about the FUN!! Heck, we all need more of that, huh? Get crazy, Jessilicious, and just enjoy how fab you are!! :-)
  • Love, love, love this post and all of the comments that have been written so far. Have been quiet the last few days but reading and trying to keep up with the posts and comments and hearing all of your stories. SO INSPIRING - all of you and reading all of the nuggets of wisdom has helped me deal with my inner critic which as been effectively hampering my ability to BELIEVE. Feel like I need to go shopping as it's been a long time since some sexy heels have been on these feet.

For me "scared shitless" turned into "I don't know what I'm doing, I'm an imposter syndrome" and that is so disempowering but a few things shifted yesterday and I'm back and I'm ready.

    Thanks everybody!
  • Yay! Jennifer-licious!
    You're back, baby!
Go find your mojo & let the B.A.L.L.S fly!
    xoxoxo
    :-)
  • The thing I am the most afraid of right now is letting my education go to waste. I struggled through two different schools and nearly nine years of full and part time schooling to get my bachelors in marketing, and it is the thing I am the most proud of in my entire life so far. A string of bad luck and dead end soulsucking jobs up until recently has kept that fear in the front of my mind on a constant basis.

Thing have been looking up, I just applied for a promotion, and I have been learning so much about myself lately that I'm now no longer terrified of wasting it, just kind of afraid.

Maybe my superhero name will help me over the top....whatchall got for me?
  • Mark, Lori is right. Your education never goes to waste. Your working so hard to accomplish that dream is an experience you can draw on as you move yourself ahead. Dead end jobs happen and paralyze us (I know!). Thank goodness you recognized that or we wouldn't have you here staring down that fear. You've applied for a promotion. You are a superhero. I'll leave the naming rights to Sally ... my well is dry at the moment! We'll be here to help you over the top.
  • Oh, it will never literally go to waste, I can use the knowledge anytime - I just mean that I'd like to be at a point where I can say that the fact that I have the degree is part of why I have the job, because that would mean I was on my way through something I could view as a career, not just a job.
  • alexisneely
Mark, perhaps this will help - it's my experience that EVERYthing you are doing in every moment is exactly as it's supposed to be to bring you to the highest version of you. As long as you keep moving forward. You ARE on your way through something far more important than your career ... life baby. You are living it! Keep moving forward.
  • Just wanted to stop in and say how completely Paqu-a-fantastique you are Lori!!
  • Drumrolllll puuleeeeeze...........
I'm drawing a name from the comments......

thanks for playing & making this day soooooooo much FUN!

    you rock!
  • Oh Sally, YOU are Sallyicious, Sallyfique, brilliant, permission giving and all around best friend. Your words and spirit are infectious (in a good way). xoxo
  • You know Lori, I've had Sally-itis for months now...you're absolutely right, her kind of infectious is the totally good kind!
  • lorilatimer
Ditto to Sally's ideas, and another one is Mark-atastic!! Your education will never go to waste. My college degree is in psychology, and I use it every single day with my clients. I envy your marketing knowledge, because that is one area that I have absolutely no education or experience in!

Good luck w/your promotion! And take it from one who has spent the last 6+ months really learning about myself again, keep at that, because you will learn things about yourself that you either never realized or had forgotten, and you will realize they are gifts to be shared.
  • Well, I envy your psychology degree - the only psychology knowlege I have is the kind you get when you ride the couch. :)

    Thank you.
  • Mark-a-rriffic! Mark-tabulous!! Mark-a-wing-ding-she-bop-doo-wop!!!
  • Makin' Copies......

heh. I'd go with the third one if I woulndt get winded trying to say it. :)
  • Mark-Tastic!
  • gieslahoelscher
I love the part about screaming at the movie screen! I've done that so many time, and it's hilarious to think of me doing it while watching myself try to make a decision. Definitely will give that a try when I'm stuck at a crossroads. What if this was a movie? What would I do?

    Super idea! Thanks!
  • For some reason the movie thing really helped me view my life from a larger lense. It's always so clear in the movies...how to "be the hero", the "right thing to do". It has definitely helped me make some tough decisions in my life.
    xoxoxo
  • Gina - lisciousness. Indeed. Must now go define what that means to me.
  • Yes, Gina-liciousness, go figure it out and report back to us.
    :-D
    we need to know!

This resonated with me on so many levels, but especially the "A" for authenticity. "You’ve got it, I promise! And it’s not hiding inside a book or a seminar or a guru, it’s inside of you" is something I really needed to hear.

As many here now know, I was divorced last year, decided to totally overhaul my life, and I turned 50 yesterday. I've been in the same career for over 20 years, one that I still love parts of, but one that I need to take to the next level. That means starting my own coaching business to help newly-single women redefine and recreate their lives. I had made this decision about 3 years ago, but then my own life got in the way and I had to deal with my own divorce (even though it was my decision to leave and one that I am so happy that I made) and the aftermath of that.

Over the last 2-3 months I had to cover for someone else at work who was on maternity leave, so I had no time to do anything to start my own business. What I did do... and what I've realized is my way of procrastinating when I'm afraid of doing something, is to "research" it to death but never actually put anything into action.

As soon as I read your question “What am I most afraid of doing right now?” I knew the answer without even having to think about it - starting my blog. Someone set up a WordPress blog for me a few weeks ago and sent me a video to walk me through getting started with it. I'm embarrassed to say that it wasn't until yesterday that I finally watched the video.

Two weeks ago I was snowed/iced in (in Atlanta!) and couldn't go to work. I spent a lot of time that day on FB and Twitter posting things, replying to posts, commenting on blogs, etc., as a first step to building the relationships, getting to know people and letting people get to know me a little more. The next morning, something hit me and I actually handwrote out a draft of my first blog. I'm still carrying it around with me.

Making all of this public terrifies me, but I know myself well enough to know that I need to do it to make myself accountable to others. I know too that in some ways I'm taking the easy way out doing it here because everyone here is so supportive of everyone else, so in one way it's "safe" :)

Yeah, I have the same fears that I've now come to realize that most everyone else does: what if I look stupid, what if I don't know what to say, what if I don't have anything "new" to say, who am I to do this, and on and on. I always think I have to know everything and everything has to be perfect before I actually do it, and I've realized that this is just another form of procrastination and a bunch of excuses, and it does not serve me in any way.

It might take me a little longer to get the hang of that blog and actually get it posted, but I just need to have the "B.A.L.L.S" to do it! And if I stumble along the way, I now know that it won't be the end of the world, and there will be plenty of people to give me some guidance and help.

Whew! I'm sure some of you know just how hard it was to put that out there, and it's made me teary-eyed to do it, but this community that Sarah has put together is awesome and seems to give us all courage that we've been hesitant to acknowledge before now.

Like someone else said, I am going to print this out when I get back home and put it on the wall in my office and all over my house because it will be a constant reminder to keep moving forward, no matter how terrifying it might be.

Thank you, Sandy! You're just the latest in the list of awesome people that have been kind enough to share your ideas and insights with us, and it is very much appreciated.

    Lori,
Here's another blog you can read http://tinyurl.com/nmpwz3 read it this am. I wanting to start blogging as well and ready for change, but like you haven't done for fear of - got lots but they are actually excuses that I need to overcome. Best of luck to you
    Susan
  • Yes, Susan - please jump in...if you wait until it's 'perfect' it'll never happen (besides, as I quickly learned, you can always edit later)!! And, I'd love to read it as well, so please post a link as soon as you've got something up :-)
  • lorilatimer
Thank you, Susan! That is fabulous. Sounds like we both just need to dip our toes in the water and take the plunge. I'm sure that you've also seen all the support there is from this group, so just imagine what else is out there if we just do it.

Best of luck to you, too, and I hope to be reading your blogs very soon!

  • Ava Diamond (@feistywoman)
Lori, I can't wait to read your first post. Be sure to let us know when you publish it.
  • lorilatimer
I will do that, Ava, and thank you for your support! What I've realized today is that everyone had a "first," so I just need to get that "first" one out of the way and go from there.
  • LaConsuelo
    Lori, Dear -

Read this now: http://www.copyblogger.com/horrible-blog-post/ - I'm sure that everyone who blogs has some trepidation at some point about clicking the PUBLISH button. I know I sure have. The wonderful Annemarie Segaric "forced" (LOL) me to publish every week whether I liked it or not. That voice telling you it stinks or that "they" won't get it is just the Inner Critic, "the Committee" or as Seth Godin's new book Linchpin calls it "lizard brain". Tell it to shut up and sit down (often easier said than done, I know). Writing doesn't improve unless it gets written. Thinking up the world's best blogpost doesn't make it so - your imagination does - the same thing that makes it the worst. I'm sure you have many people to support you - right here in this tribe and I'd be happy to do that. Go on . . . click it . . . PUBLISH!
  • Ava Diamond (@feistywoman)
Connie...thanks for posting the link to that "horrible blog post" link. As someone who's just about to start blogging, that was great to read!
  • lorilatimer
Connie, I laughed my ass off the entire time I read that Copyblogger post - it was priceless... and perfect for me. Thank you again. I think I'll print that and put it right next to Sandy's post when I get home!!
  • Okay Lori-AwesomeHeart, I am actually replying to your post waaaay up there! ;-) You've obviously come through a LOT this past year and I think it is awesome-tastic that you are branching out into your own coaching business. THAT takes BALLS!! One thing that struck me most is how one person's 'most afraid of' is another's 'not too bad' or even 'weeee- this is fun'. I had very little trepidation about starting my first blog (just less than a year ago) or how people might respond to my writing. The only thing that concerned (still concerns) me is that it is not enough. Not deep enough, smart enough, inspirational enough. But even with those insecurities I have faith that it will develop and grow as it's meant to. But starting my own business, leading people? Holy cow - I think that is AMAZING and you are incredibly strong and fabulous and caring!! Go get 'em, Lori-AwesomeHeart, you're a total SuperHero!!

    #thatisall
  • As a loyal reader of ALL the blogs you post - I'd just like to say that your Super Hero name still stands with me: Anj-irational. #thatisall #You'reSoMoneyAndYouDon'tEvenKnowIt #WhenWillWeKaraoke
  • Actually, Anj-irRational sounds just about right to me, too ;-) But seriously, Bring It! And by 'It', I mean 'You' and by 'Bring' I mean, get thyself to Vegas, woman!! #LookingForwardToKaraokeWithYouButBeWarnedIwillNeedDrinksFirst
  • #WillBringExtraMoney #NOlemonMartinis #itsGoingToHappen
  • lorilatimer
Oh, trust me, those fun thoughts race through my mind, too! But you are absolutely right - it takes faith. The funny thing is that I am really good at my paralegal job (in divorce law, and I work for one of the top divorce lawyers in GA), and people actually pay my firm $200 AN HOUR for me to do my freaking job!!! With some comments from clients through the years, I've come to realize that I have so much more to offer in the time after a divorce, so I just need to quit doubting myself and get to it.

Thanks for your kind words, because you are another one here that I have come to really enjoy keeping up with through your insight and comments, and am learning so much from!
  • Wow - you just made my heart smile...thank you! And, hell yeah, woman, get out there and GO FOR IT!! I also want to read that first post on your blog, so I hope you post a link here when you get it up :-)
  • lorilatimer
I have read such wonderful things not only by you here, but about you, so... where can I find your blog or website?? I want to read more :)
  • Thanks! My first ever blog is at: http://writergrrl.pnn.com (several topics) and with the New Year I started one about finding, recognizing, embracing Joy at: http://joyisachoice.wordpress.com

I like to Live Open, as the gorgeous SallysEyes says, so you'll certainly find out more about me! Along those lines, next month I start a new project with Sally - Dr. Brene Brown asked us to co-facilitate a read-along of her book "I Thought It Was Just Me" at: http://ithoughtitwasjustme.pnn.com That project will surely see me laying it all out there in terms of my "not good enough" issues!! Would LOVE to see you peek in to any of the sites, so say 'Hi!'
  • lorilatimer
I will read that now - thank you Connie! I like the "shut up and sit down" idea. I think I'll add that right after "thank you for sharing" - they seem to go together quite nicely!

Yeah, that PUBLISH button freaks me out. The thought of it makes me want to throw up :) Kinda reminds me of pregnancy and childbirth - I did a lot of throwing up before I gave birth to my two wonderful sons, but it was all worth it after they were born!
  • BTW, you are talking to a Virgo-aka perfectionist of the worst kind! My inner critic was SO loud, it stopped me from writing my book for so long.

One of my favorite writing quotes is from the fabulous Natalie Goldbert "Writing Down the Bones", something like "you have to be willing to write the worst junk in America in order to be a writer".
  • lorilatimer
Now I like that quote, and especially the message behind it :)
  • me too, and it's Natalie Goldberg... not Goldbert. I was typing too fast. :-)
  • It appears only fitting that on this day after your milestone birthday - I offer you a SuperHero name for consideration. To me, you will forever now be known as Lori-AwesomeHeart!! (Because that's exactly what you are ...)
  • lorilatimer
All right, SallysEyes, I'll give that a try :) And you my friend are the epitome of "Caring Creates." So very appropriate!

(Geez, I didn't realize how long that post was that I wrote until I just came back on here and saw it - oy!)
  • I think the most powerful part of the saying "face your fears and do it anyway" is to accurately identify the fear and then understand why you fear it. Once you do that, the fear is rendered powerless.

Congrats to you on so many big life changes and happy belated birthday! :)
  • lorilatimer
LOL - I started reading "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway" yesterday :)

Thank you for the words of encouragement. You are absolutely right - once we face our fears, we take back our control and power!
  • Happy Birthday to you! Lori-licious!
and yes! go post that damn blog! write every day! put yourself out there.... you must.
Send me the post, I can't wait to read it.
    mmwwaaahhhh!
Sending you my most powerful mojo!
    xoxoxo
  • lorilatimer
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are "one" of the many people that I have been reading, following, keeping up with, and being inspired by... and I actually read your book a couple of years ago and it's awesome! OK, I'm working on that damn blog! I think one of the things that's held me back is because I don't have a website or actual products or services yet, plus, everything I read says that you need to blog x many times a week or whatever and all that. With my full time job, it's going to be difficult for a while to be consistent. I'm open to thoughts or suggestions :)
  • write 1st thing in the morning... I just read/heard that it's actually EASIER to do something everyday, rather than try to do it 3 or 4 times a week.

try the timer too! You don't have to write for hours, start w/ 10 minutes.

Here's my super-duper-magic-secret-awesomesauce. Set the timer for 10 minutes and go! Your creativity loves the pressure and will perform! you may start out writing, "i don't know what to write....i can't think of anything to say...." but if you force yourself to keep the pen moving (or your fingers typing) until the timer goes off , I promise, something will come!

Use the prompts from JOurnalution to get you going, too.
    xoxoxo
  • lorilatimer
Those are great ideas - I've heard the timer thing several times recently so I will definitely do that.

And as soon as I get back home Sun., I'm going to find your book and dive back into it!

    Hugs!
  • alexisneely
Lori, congratulations on opening yourself up here. What a great first piece of blogging you've just shared with all of us in your comment. Beautiful.
  • lorilatimer
Wow - thank you, Alexis, for the very kind words and support. Coming from you, I am very flattered.

I am very excited about your Money Map program starting on Tuesday. I believe it's just one more of the tools I need to succeed in this journey I am on. I have committed myself to participating in Sarah's 30 Days program, and while I won't be able to participate live in most of the calls because of that j-o-b (in the Eastern time zone - Atlanta) that's currently still paying my bills :), I am just as committed to following through with your program and participating in any other ways I can.

I do look forward to "talking" to you on Tuesday's call, though!

    Hugs, Lori
  • “You’ve got to find your own “IT” factor. You’ve got it, I promise! And it’s not hiding inside a book or a seminar or a guru, it’s inside of you.”
So true! And my creative butterflies are often after a period where nothing seems to make sense or is coming together and after a bunch of “trying” or “should-ing” I let go and then “poof” a fully formed idea appears (lots of times when in the shower…) of something brand new that I had not thought of and then it’s the thrill of getting moving on it. Entrpreneurship seems to be made up of strings of these…

Sandy – would love to hear more about how do you stay motivated? Your enthusiasm for life always channels through strongly in whatever you seem to be up to!
  • well, it's easy for it to LOOK as if I "stay motivated" all the time, because that's when I'm posting & tweeting, etc. But the truth is... I'm fairly quiet most of the time... in my pajama's, no make-up, doing my work, lots of writing, editing, working w/ clients.

I am very clear that I need lots of quiet time to do the work I do. I take naps. My family gets very frustrated with my "one-thing-a-day" rule, but it's the slower pace of life I truly enjoy. I have lots of times when I can't control my schedule, and I'm running around the world, but I make sure that is not my normal way of being, I'm very protective of my free time.

Since we moved to Colorado, hiking & skiing are the ways I "fill myself up" w/ good energy, starting the day celebrating (with my cafe mocha) & doing lots of things from my "things I love list" help me keep my energy up.

    is that helpful?
  • Yes! Already was your fan and now even more. Yippee to naps. Big believer. :)
  • Kristin
I like your idea of one thing per day and taking things at a slower pace. It prevents that you feel overwhelmed by all the tasks of one day. When you accomplish everything you want in one day you will almost automatically feel more confident and believe in yourself.
  • I also like how this post contrasts with day 10 "You are not a rockstar" (by Yvonne) -- tweaks your brain a bit.
  • I know! I tweeted Sarah that I wanted to be a rock star AND serve millions of people. ;-)

when someone says "either/or", I like to say "BOTH".
  • Kristin
Thank you for this marvellous post, Sandy. It really applies to all aspects of our lives. I will start small with B.A. The belief in myself is the missing key since I tend to downplay my skills and experiences. Probably that's more Fearella speaking, being afraid that others don't agree with my work or that I can't satisfy their expectations. So my biggest step for today will be to listen to the whisper inside me.
  • Kristin-licious! That is a faaaaabulous step-Dahhhling.
    xoxoxo
    mmwwaahh!
  • Batman
Sounds like I'll have to steal your acronym, and use it for an upcoming poker article. Thanks!!!
  • I would be honored Batman.
  • ROTFL! I Love this! I'm going to write B.A.L.L.S. on my planner page everyday as a reminder.

You know what I enjoy most about this post? This is a life skill that not only benefits me and helps me improve my life & business but it's also one I can pass on to my children. I want my kids to learn this early. I would like them to always live with B.A.L.L.S. Personally,I feel that one of the greatest achievements I can make in my personal growth teaching the things I've learned to my children early in life. With the hope that they won't be 35 years old and learning that it's not only okay but that it's good and right to live out loud with authenticity and be the star in their own lives.

Thanks for the acronym it's one I will be using daily!
  • Rachel I agree!
I have two girls ages 11 & 13 years and my greatest intention is for them to have the self-confidence I did not have as a young woman.
  • I can see it now. Your phone rings, you answer. "Hello, Ms. Miller? This is your child's School Principal calling. S/he's been sent to my office and I think we should have a little talk. Seems that s/he got upset with the teacher because 'the environment was not conducive to the expressive use of her/his BALLS'." ...
  • Oh. My. God. I am naming next borne child Sally, regardless of gender. Period.
  • The name certainly has its downfalls - just so you know. Like when you're awkward and introverted and in Grade 8 - and Eric Clapton decides that THIS is the perfect time to launch a blockbuster tune that makes your life a living agony because every time someone refers to it, you blaze bright red from embarrassment. (Or maybe that's just me ...)

I wonder if I'll ever fully appreciate Lay Down Sally ...
  • Yeah, well, the only song my name has ever appeared in is by Prince's Get Off. Funny and tragic all at the same time.
  • I got:
"Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee, lousy with........"
    good times.
  • Here's a fun one by m-flo from 2005 -- shake it w/ feathers and heels! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Noq2a1L6t6k

You can jive to this one by Skakin' Stevens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSGKzMoalbs

And there was one by a German band, but I couldn't understand the lyrics so opted not to post it.
  • :) Wouldn't that be fabulous!! I'd love to get that call. It's totally something my 8 year old, who we call "the Princess", would do.

Maybe this is something we should pass on to teachers. Hmmmmm..........imagine a world where this was taught in school.
  • I often imagine a world where personal empowerment and creative expression (tempered w/ respect and responsibility of course) were honoured, celebrated and encouraged in our public schools. In the meantime, we'll just keep doing our best while the children are at home. Have a great weekend Super Hero Rachel!
  • Yes! Yes! Yes!!!
You ladies are TOTAL ROCK STARS!!

You're children are soooooo friggin' blessed to have you! (please tell them I said that.)
  • Okay, I'll tell them - however I do so with trepidation because I'm sure all their eye-rolling is going to trigger a seizure one day ..

    Seriously though, thank you.
  • laurieboris
Also deathly afraid of possibly going for a degree in nutrition...something I've been wanting to do for a while. I worry that I won't have the energy, that it will not leave me time to do my f-lance work.
  • laurieboris
I am most afraid of starting a new, risky project that I have in mind. I'll have to put some $$ into it, which I can't afford to lose. I'm not afraid to fail - hell, I've done that dozens of times - but in this instance, a lot will be at stake.
  • I'm not a huge fan of Leaping off cliffs, I like to take baby steps until i feel the OVERWHELMING "yes!" or "this is it!"....
I would say.....if you want my opinion.....
What's the smallest, first step you could take today that would not require great risk, but would be a definite sign to the universe that you are ready to move in that direction?

send an email? make a call? do some research?

here's my favorite question to ask my inner wisdom:
    1. first take a deep breath
    2. Imagine it's 5 years from now and things have gone better than you ever could have imagined
    3. what does that look like? can you see yourself? confident, powerful, having achieved this 'thing'?
    4. connect with her, YOU at your greatest, stare her in the eyes and ask:
"what is the one thing I could do today that would have the greatest impact on my life/business?"

notice the first thing that pops into your head, just notice.....

I do this at least once a day.
    :-)
  • laurieboris
Thank you, Sandy; I'm definitely going to try this. And I'm going to print it out and stick it next to my computer!
  • I feel you, sister. Let me grab an oar and row down that river with you! I always go back tot he zen saying of "leap and the net will appear." Of course, the currently non-existent net must have a checkbook...
  • laurieboris
Sandy, wicked good post. I love my Laurietude (that's what I call it.) When my husband proofreads something I've written, he tells me to "goose it up," meaning that it's too dry and it needs more Laurietude. But I've long ago put down my superhero cape. It's only gotten me into trouble. That cape gives me license to think I can do it all, which for me, is self-destructive. But I get what you were going for...and these are excellent reminders to be your most excellent!
  • Totally! SuperHero definitely does NOT mean doing it all.
I think it just means, living from your Greatness or Magnificence... embracing your special powers.

    I love "Laurietude", so great.
  • Laurie - what if you had the wrong cape before? After all, it was Wonder Woman's wasn't it? Not yours AT ALL. Now - the cape of Laurietude -- I can see it now ... true blue, ecofriendly, and designed to fit any mood with flow and grace. It also shoots sparks when you least expect it - electrifying all in your presence ...
  • laurieboris
    Works for me! ;)
  • From my journalution: Who's got C.L.I.T.S?
    C ourage
    L ive out Loud
    I ntegrity
    T enacity
    S pecial Powers
  • omg- that is HYSTERICAL!!!!
    C.L.I.T.S.!!!!!

You just took BALLS to a whole 'nother level, baby!
    Go Cherry-licious!
  • Awesome... Have you heard of the book "Cunt: A declaration of independence" by Inga Musico? Made me think of it.
  • I haven't heard of that book. is it good?
  • Inga is an incredible writer. Definitley check her book out-- it has a bit of a 90's riot grrl flavor, will make you laugh, is very honest, and it's exactly what Molly is speaking to -- looks at embracing the word "cunt" that is at the bottom of the barrel of "bad words" to throw around. And she asks why/ When balls, cojohones, etc have a more positive/bold spin.
  • Have you ever heard Madonna's dance mix version of "Disco Inferno?" The intro is a DJ prepping the spin, saying "you're listening to KUNT, all Madonna, all the time." I think it was an effective and sly way of her embracing a what some see as a pejorative term and making it her own.
  • Have really enjoyed reading all of the posts in the 30-day challenge so far and I mean no dis-respect to those who have posted to date, but this post has been my favorite. Sandy, you just expressed so concisely and cleverly what we really need to do to change our game.
  • Rachel- thanks so much! I really appreciate it & I'm so glad you enjoyed!
What are you going to do today to express your B.A.L.L.S. ??
    :-D
  • John
We all are the writer, producer & actor in our own movie. Do the thing that you fear and the death of that fear is certain. Some people watch things happen, some people wait for things to happen and some people make things happen
  • Well said!
    (can I call you John-y-licious?) ;-D
  • Sandy - I LOVE IT! Funny story, indulge me here. My assistant manager (who I mention in the shoes conversation as well) does not get nearly as much shit at work from our superiors. The man has NO filter and gets away with stuff that people would freak out if I did or said and I'm his boss! He said that it was because I didn't have BALLS. When I was telling him about working through Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way he asked if Part 12 was growing BALLS. It has been a joke for ages. I may now need to inform him that I have learned a lesson from you and will now have BALLS. I think he'll be proud.

P.S. I started writing this comment to share an amusing ancedote. Oddly, once I finished, I found something rather profound buried in there. I'll be mulling that over and potentially sharing later. Oh, who am I kiddin'? I'll be back later!
  • Vanessa!
I dare you to walk up to him and announce "I found my B.A.L.L.S.!"
    LOL
can't wait to hear your 'a-ha'!
  • Thoroughly enjoyed this post. All of the points are totally applicable to me:
Believe - gets me through the "WTF am I doing" phases
Authenticity - to many times I see others (and myself) try to be too much like someone else they admire or follow. Your own voice is where it has to be.
    Live out Load - Holla!
Liciousness - I have way under utilized my inner licious
SuperHero - Reminds me of the fearlessness when running around as a kid pretending to be (Superman, Batman, Luke Skywalker - don't doubt the power of underoos) that was fun then and should be fun now.

    Ed-licious
  • Ed-licious!
We need to bring the Underoos back, dude!
They contained power & fun a lethal combo, for sure.
  • Okay, maybe it's the musicality that runs through my veins - but I'm hooked on the LS (la las) in BALLS. My Super Hero gift is 'seeing what isn't there' ... seeing intent, symbols, meaning where none appear to be. So ~ my Liscious-ness name is going to be SallysEyes (say it fast - Sallysize!! - and not in the fat-way, but in the larger-than-life-step-out-of-yourself way). And I will commit to Living Loud(er) with this SuperHero talent because THAT is what scares me to death.

    Sarah - LOVED today's song! (Sally G. - that's not my name, SallysEyes - that's now my name ...)
  • laurieboris
    Not "Wonder Magnet?" ;)
  • She's my Alter Ego ...
  • SallysEyes & ANJ-IRATION!
I am laughing, laughing, laughin so hard!
    LOVE IT!
  • LOVE SallysEyes - too awesome!! I may not have a SuperHero gift (yet), but I'm damn glad to know that I recognize them when they're in disguise (like parading as mild-mannered SallyG)!!
  • Oh my dear, blind friend - you have come to the right place for SuperHero power naming. Prepare to be SallysEyes'ed --

When you enter the Inner Sanctum, lift the Golden Chalice that awaits you on the glowing alter - hold it high while lifting your eyes to the Heavens and embrace all that goes with this proclamation: I, Writergrrl, will henceforth proceed through life as ANJ-IRATION - because I am inspiration to the power of INFINITY!!!
  • OMG - laughing, laughing, laughing...but also blessed! Thank you for using your vision to give me my new name - I'm putting on my purple SuperHero cape and taking the name for a spin throughout the day!!
  • whheeee! BALLS to the walls baby! LOL...love, love it Sandy:-) I've been doing things this past year that have not only given my butterflies but have made me want to throw up (and I mean that literally!!)

I love the liciousness...funnily, I get together with girlfriends for what we call "Bucket Fridays" where each of us gets to choose the place to eat and activity for the afternoon...we have come up with some silly, funny and naughty "licious" names ourselves:-)

One one of my goals this year is to take every opportunity to live outside my comfort zone, take a FLYING leap into my brilliance (with no parachute!) and embrace LICIOUSNESS to the max!

What a delight to meet you Sandy...cocktails with you would be a blast!!!
  • alexisneely
Cocktails with Sandylicious is an absolute blast! Just back from said cocktails and catching up on #30 days before I crawl in bed.
  • ohhhh, I AM JEALOUS!!!! :-) Get some well earned rest my dear!
  • Cheers!
I love that- "Bucket Fridays" how much fun. YOu must write about some of the adventures!

I've had the "I think I'm gonna throw-up...right after I kick ass" feeling alot lately, too. :-D
It makes the ride-of-life more fun, don't cha think?
  • oh yea...it makes it a helluva a lot of fun for sure! just don't get puke on the shoes;-) that totally sucks!
  • I'm seeing one of those buttons w/ the red circle and line through it- No Puking on the Fabulous Shoes :-)
  • HA! Girlfriends and i like to say "no spew on the shoe" ;-)
  • claudiaq
Soooo there with the shoes - first thing I did when I qualified as a lawyer was buy plenty of 4inch high shoes - to make me feel taller, to make me stand straighter, to make me feel damn kick ass!! I soon became known for them!
  • Ahhhh shoes, yes, they can certainly make you feel damn kick ass!
we need a shoe twit-pic party where we post pics of our favorite kick ass shoes!
  • This is a haiku I posted to my twitterstream one day:

    Strappy orange shoes/just a little dangerous./Fierce platforms.Striding. #poetry #haiku

I love the power of the right pair of shoes.
  • LaConsuelo
Sandy, every time I start to type a comment, I start to laugh OUT LOUD all over again. You are my kinda gal . . . starting with BALLS is my fave expletive (us and Gwyneth Paltrow according to her Inside the Actors' Studio interview).

It's so funny that "A" should be authenticity. That one really kicked me in the "A". For some time I'd been something of a personal development/self-improvement junkie (maybe still am a bit but now because it's interesting and fun - not to fix myself). Always looking OUT THERE and looking at people I admire (like you and Sarah Robinson for convenient examples) for the answers about me and the keys to my life. Tricky thing about that: it always somewhere devolved into the comparison game Dr. Mollie Marti was talking about in her wonderful post yesterday . . . something like "I can't do that; so&so's already doing it and they're doing it perfectly!" Uy.

By allowing myself to embrace B.A.L.L.S., it all stops feeling like such a danged struggle doesn't it?! After all, why the heck would you resist YOURSELF? Plus there's the great JLo salsa dancin' theme song.

I'll be turning 50 this year so perhaps I'll become UberConnielicious!

    Thanks, Sandy!
  • Watch Out! da-da-da.....
    UberConnielicious!
    I love it.

  • disclosure: Sandy is freaking awesome & I've known & loved her for years ... and stuff from her book got me on the path to living my truth. :) okay, now that we got the disclosure out of the way ....

“What am I most afraid of doing right now?” <-- this is a brilliant question I ask myself regularly. daily, really. it's a question form of my daily "goal" (for lack of a better word) of being uncomfortable every single day.

this was the question I asked myself when I am deciding what programs to launch, who to ask to be a speaker, where to go on a trip, what adventure to go on next, whether I should place a phone call, who I should email or DM, whether I should post that video, what book to read, whether I should kiss the boy ... everything.

so if there is one take away from this post, that's it. :)

    ~ ElizabethPW
  • you forgot "whether I should kiss the girl"... if I remember...... <evil grin>
    we'll always have Vegas, baby.

    :-D

  • I think I have a pretty hysterical video of you giving me a testimonial after NUMEROUS cocktails. :-D
I'm truly laughing out loud right now, just remembering.....
    so fun.

Sandy! Brilliant. This speaks to me! My fave part was the....SUPERHERO! My life IS a movie and I AM the star! (just ask my family :) Thank you so much for this. I'm following you on Twitter now....hoping to find out about anything else you have written? Love it. Megan
  • I like the Superhero analogy. We already know we have great insight - we give great advice to others. We have to have to the courage to follow our own counsel. I'm off to get my cape - BRB. *kapwing!* :)
  • What's BRB?
I'm saying *kapwing!* out loud.... :-D
    da-da-da-da- it's a bird!
    it's a plane!
    it's......
    Deeeeeeeelicious!
  • Be Right Back! :) *swoosh!*
  • ahhhhh! thanks!
    BRB! *swoosh!* *bam* *pow* !
  • kristieschwanebeck
I really like the point about quieting down, listening to inner voice and hearing what makes you afraid and then going out and doing that one thing. I think that if we did one fearful thing a day, what we end up accomplishing would surpass even our own expectations. Thank you for that encouragement.
  • meganmatthieson

Me too. I took a step right away. It was scary but GREAT.

Thanks Sandy! Signed up. I'm all signed up beause you are a Sister in Fabulous and SHOES. :)
  • :-)
    You rock.

SHOES! definitely make me happy and can totally change your game. lol
  • I actually have a pair of shoes than when I wear them to the office, my assistant manager (who is a dude 19 years older than me) proclaims, "Oh no folks! Take cover. She's got 'the shoes' on." They know. They know I'm in ass hauling mode. The make me like the Tina Turner of community building. Rollin'... Rollin'...
  • omg- Rollin'.... Rollin'....
    Go Tina-Go Tina!
    so great!

you guys are giving me great quotes!
    keep 'em coming!

Vanessa-licious, I will need your permission to use this one as well....
    so great.
  • Would be delighted!
  • kristieschwanebeck
Shoes......I used to NEVER be a shoe girl and then as I started to develop myself professionally, I wore heels and I felt a very subtle shift in my self...I felt far more self empowered and confident. I felt a very very deep transformation inside myself. I typically choose to wear heels now, but most especially when I am fearful of something.
  • I love this comment! I Love love love wearing cute shoes - I feel SO different when I put on a pair of heels or a really cute pair of sandals! Sometimes I do it just knowing that my attitude will be different once I do ! I can't wait to read this book :)
  • dude! I'm using this quote in my book. send me your contact info, so I can give you credit. that's an amazing observation.
    I love it.
  • kristieschwanebeck
are you serious??? I want that book.....lol
  • Kristie! Look at you go!! 12 days in and you're now getting quoted in a published book - your inner Swan is rising, I'm so excited for you!!
  • kristieschwanebeck
Thank you Sally, I was quite surprised, thrilled and honoured myself. I crowed to my kids about it!!!!
  • Yes! DM me on twitter. I'm writing a chapter called "When is a Shoe Not a Shoe". This is perfect!
  • "When is a Shoe Not a Shoe- You Are What You Stand On" answer: when it represents your foundation.
It’s not what your shoes “say” about you, it’s the feeling you get when you’re wearing them that matters.
  • Sandy - you know, I own *1* pair of heels. They are my Vegas shoes. That cost over $400 (!!). And the universe bought them for me. (paid for w/ gambling winnings). And when I put them on ... well, you saw me. ;)
  • I remember! They are your magic Ruby Slippers!

click your heels together & repeat after me:
"There's no place like Vegas, There's no place like Vegas"

  • I totally agree Kristie. I interviewed Gretchen Rubin author of The Happiness Project last night, and she said she discoveredin her research that "doing new things, constantly learning" is one of the best ways to find happiness. What gives you butterflies?
    :-D
  • kristieschwanebeck
launching six businesses and graduating with my MA all in one year....that's what gives me butterflies
  • kristieschwanebeck
re- constantly learning and doing new things....a friend of mine once challenged me to do something as simple as brushing your teeth with your non dominant hand (or the hand that you don't usually do that with). By doing so consistently, we force and strengthen new neural pathways in our brain which continues to facilitate the learning and growing process....
  • uh, yeah... you get the OverAchiever badge for sure, dude. :-)

and Yes! in Journalution, I talk about when you really want to get to your truth, write a letter to yourself with your non-dominate hand, and use the prompt "I don't want to write about....." go! 10 minutes, no editing...

    it will rock your world.

  • I've made a note to do this too. I love exercises that keep my mind/ego busy while my intuition has the floor. Thanks!!
  • Cool! Me too!
Let me know if anything exciting happens.
    :-D

  • Love the Journalution exercise...I forgot how intense and eye-opening that is (they often use it in therapy trying to tap into the Inner Child) - I'm doin' that one today!!

    Cheers,

  • I know! I don't journal every day- (I don't like rules), but it's THE THING that I know will help me find my own answers and reconnect me to my Inner Wisdom every single time.

I always say- I'm not a guru, I don't have your answers. But I believe your answers can be found on the blank page.

    That's what works for me!

    You're faaaaabulous ~ Anjaliciousness!

Sandy- there are some gentlemen here. What could me the masculine version of say Sarahlicious?!
  • I think channelling Hercules might work. How about Nate-ules, Dave-ules, Mark-ules, etc.?
  • I like that! What do the boys say? (or should I say what do our Greek Gods of the web say?) ;-)
  • Well.... you'll have to give me some examples to play with, but my husband Richard.... loves it when I call him Richard-licious. :-D
  • sarahrobinson
Yes, but I doubt he (or David) would refer to themselves as that with their friends like we do. :-) So, using Richard as an example, how could he refer to himself in a masculine yet audacious way?
  • Super Nate! Amaaaazing Dave!
    Rock Star Nate-Man.

    ?????
We need to do this over cocktails.....
  • Oh dear.
  • sarahrobinson
See Nate - you are a perfect example. I am betting that you would love it if a female purred Nate-a-licious to you BUT what masculine equivalent can we find that you can use to refer to youself?!
