If I Were a Snail

an essay by The Young Turk

If I were a snail I would be a pond snail. I would swim fairly slow. I would be very useless.  My shell would be made out of calcium. I would play. We would play with another snail. We would play.  I would leave a trail of slime. I would love being a snail.

I would have one foot.

I would have fun.

Also I would play snail ball.

I love it. Especially the p.s. – Snail Ball sounds like a cool game, especially in that it’s played by creatures with only one foot… I would imagine, however, that play would slow down over the course of the game, what with all the slime trails.

    Thanks for sharing…

Thanks Tobias. :-) Yes – this afternoon I think we are going to try and create Snail Ball in the front yard. Wondering what to use for slime……

Put a giant dollop of Dippity Do on his head, turn him upside down, send him sliding — and TA DA … snail slime!

Goes to show you how much I know ~ snails have feet? (Or, Snail has Foot??) I wonder if, when they do get tired, they just roll onto their backs and skim the slime as Slick SlimeBoarders?

The Young Turk is starting to build his online tribe early I see.

I love the imagination and thinking process of kids. Yesterday my wife and I spent all day watching our son play with “Giant” and “Monster” his two new imaginary friends.

I constantly wonder where we, as adults, could go if we could return to the innocent creativity of our children.

    Yeah Young “The Snail” Turk!

Are you kidding?! I am very much aware of the fact that the Young Turk has a ton more fans than I do. He doesn’t have his own twitter account or blog because I couldn’t take the competition. I have a fragile ego like that. :-)

And yes – tapping into that youthful imagination and creativity would be breathtaking as a grown-up I think.

I try not to do this a lot but when someone mentions it directly, it’s hard to resist – I actually did a post on this very subject, which was one of those inspired I’m-just-channeling-the-cosmos ones… if anyone wants to check it out, it’s here: http://fearlesscreativity.com/todder-creativity/

How awesome that I now have a name for all those one-footed, calcium coated, useless creatures that leave trails of slime in their wake. Knowing now that they like to have fun ~ I will forever carry a ball in my purse and lob it at them when I see them coming!

    Thank you Young Turk!!

My favorites from the mouth of a babe: “I would be very useless. ” Yes, just being is enough.

“I would play.” Yes, very important. As a grown-up (by age alone) I forget to play. Sometimes.

“We would play with another snail. We would play.” Yes, reinforce the importance of play.

“I would love being a snail.” Hmmm, do I love being human?

“Also I would play snail ball.” What time is the game. I wanna play too! Choose me. Choose me.

    Thanks Sarah. great sharing.
