Sarah, you move me- many people have tried but I guess I see through their pretending to be authentic to be great - when they are just lying to themselves and everyone around them. You are truly amazing and so authentic that it moves others to greatness! Now that is a true Warrior-Preneur!

You and your son sound like exceptional people. You, because you are a hero. Your son, well, he really gets it on a lot of levels.

I'm not sure how I got to your site today but it's really resonating with me about something I'm experiencing now. I think it's more the Riptide of Ignorance than Mediocrity. But, doesn't matter -- it feels the same. So, I'm going to view my current experience in terms of the riptide and act on it in a way to ensure it doesn't pull me away from what is most meaningful. Thanks. This was a great post.

As a great lover of the ocean, I've been in this situation a few times as well. And I love the way you develop the analogy. There's an easier way, though, to escape a riptide than to battle against it with all your will until your strength is sapped. There is choosing to swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the rip and then can ride easily back in. Just like that. And it is sometimes that easy to get out of mediocrity: choose the path that sometimes takes you a little out of your way, the non-obvious path. @marionchapsal reminded me this morning that sometimes we keep beating out heads against the same wall, thinking force will break us through. When really, we just need to look in other directions where doors and windows are open to us. Just a thought...

Your post is so well-crafted, and it resonated very strongly with me.

I try every day to out-swim the riptide of mediocrity. Sometimes it's easy to recognize and outpace, but others it is hard to spot ... and, like your son and his friend, by the time I notice it I feel like it might be too late to get back to shore.

It can be difficult, discouraging, depressing, and even downright soul-devouring to decide to push back against the easy-yet-mediocre pull exerted by life as we know it. I'm so happy to find someone else who appreciates (and can articulate) the depth of the challenge as well as the rewards for besting it.

Sarah, just loved this post! Gripping for me from start to finish as a mom and as a student of life! I am sure that mediocrity is one of the biggest perils out there because anything more ugly looking we steer clear of, but your metaphor here says it so well. We are unwittingly drawn in. See ya on Twitter and congratulations on a great, inspiring post. I will share it with my family and friends for sure! ;)

This post spoke to me on several levels: as a mom, as a woman, as a beach vacationer, as a writer, as a business owner, and as a person who doesn't particularly care for mediocrity, but realizes frequently that she's been caught off guard and swept up in it. We can't be perfect, but it does take vigilance to keep mediocrity at bay.
